We've decide to pilot an MI. The initiative aspires to provide a platform for men which uses our collective wisdom, knowledge, skills, and resources to understand matters of concern.
Through this pilot we aim to work together to identify opportunities for support, understanding, and practical guidance to our fellow men so that they can continue to lead fulfilled lives. Moreover, the 'Men’s Institute' pilot aims collectively exploring issues that affect men leads to possible solutions to these problems.
The 'Men’s Institute’s' inaugural pilot meeting took place on 20th October 2016 in Peckham, South East London. Over the course of the first year we worked towards defining a suitable future shape for this platform, its values, purpose, and goals.
During our second year we moved on to building our community. We formed a close core group of men from diverse backgrounds and we continue to build relationships across a number of platforms. Friendships have been formed and challenges overcome. We are now working on future directions and building a proposal for an actual 'Men's Institute'
We propose that a Men’s Institute would be founded on the values of mutual understanding, compassion and positive change through action. MI groups would look towards enhancing the wellbeing of members through the relationships formed and through shared learning. We would look to embrace the strengths of men and support each other towards realising our full potential, whilst being open to facing head on the difficulties and challenges.
Our pilot group provided a monthly forum and meeting space for all men to come together. The forum was structured to achieve four goals:
- To offer a relaxed social space for attendees to interact and connect with other like-minded men, and form social bonds and structures to take the project forward
- A group activity or discussion to develop understanding of topics that are of mutual interest and benefit
- Make collective steps towards tangible improvement in lives of men and our communities through positive action
- To build on our achievements pro-actively together as a group
